Zirconia Crowns and Bridges
Monolithic (full-contour) zirconia crowns and bridges are fabricated entirely from high-strength zirconia ceramic without a separate porcelain layer. Modern translucent and multi-layered zirconia materials have greatly improved aesthetics while retaining exceptional mechanical properties. These restorations are manufactured using CAD/CAM technology for precise fit.
Advantages:
- Extremely high fracture toughness and flexural strength – among the strongest dental ceramics available
- Excellent durability for posterior teeth and patients who grind or clench
- Can be fabricated with reduced thickness, allowing more conservative tooth preparation
- Fully biocompatible with no metal content
- When properly polished, causes minimal wear on opposing natural teeth
Disadvantages:
- Traditional opaque zirconia has limited translucency; high-translucency grades improve aesthetics but still may not match the natural enamel of anterior teeth as well as glass ceramics
- Hard material can be more difficult to adjust or re-contour chairside
- If the surface remains rough, it may cause accelerated wear of opposing enamel
Application Limitations:
- Best indicated for posterior crowns and bridges, or for patients with parafunctional habits (bruxism)
- For highly aesthetic anterior cases, multi-layered translucent zirconia or lithium-disilicate ceramics are often preferred
- Requires careful surface polishing and glazing after any chairside adjustment to protect opposing dentition
